Mike Magee with a MOTM worthy performance
In front of a home crowd of 25,667, LA Galaxy routed DC United 4-1 in their MLS 2016 season home opener after early injuries to Dan Kennedy and Giovani dos Santos.
The festivities did not start well for LA Galaxy as they conceded an early goal to DC United that was placed to the left of Galaxy GK Kennedy, by Lamar Neagle.
Neagle’s go-ahead goal proved to not be decisive as DC United coach Ben Olsen vowed his team would “lick our wounds and get back out there next week” after the Galaxy comeback rout.
LA would burn an early sub as goalkeeper Dan Kennedy came out injured out at the 19th minute mark. Early reports indicated Kennedy suffered a groin injury.
Hometown rookie centerback Daniel Steres would cap his debut by heading in the first and tying goal for LA. Steres would head in the 54 minute from a Mike Magee executed corner.
After the game Steres reflected about his debut goal stating, “I gotta give [Galaxy teammate] Gyasi [Zardes] a lot of credit. We worked on a couple plays like that and he did a good job [blocking my defender for me].”
Injuries would strike the LA squad a second time as dos Santos was substituted at half time for journeyman Magee. Magee quickly made his mark on the game finishing a through pass by Sebastian Lletget near the left edge of the penalty box in the 64th minute.
Magee would be influential in Galaxy’s third goal as he was brought down by the DC United defenders inside the penalty box in the 82nd minute. Earning the Galaxy a penalty which Robbie Keane coolly converted.
Magee converted a second goal and brace for the night off a freekick taken by Steven Gerrard in the 87th minute after Keane was fouled during a counterattack.
Coach Bruce Arena pleased with Magee’s performanced stated “one of the reasons we wanted to bring Mike back out here. We think he’s a great player that can score goals.”
